Saildrone Mission Highlights Role of Uncrewed Systems in Maritime Security
A Saildrone Voyager unmanned surface vehicle (USV) assisted the U.S. Navy in tracking a suspected drug-smuggling vessel, which was subsequently intercepted in the Caribbean, leading to the seizure of approximately $81 million worth of cocaine. This operation underscores the transition of autonomous maritime systems from experimental platforms to operational tools for real-world security missions.
Details of the Operation
The interception occurred on October 16, 2025, with the Navy and Saildrone releasing details of the operation this week. The Navy has extended Saildrone’s counter-narcotics mission in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.
This operation was part of the efforts coordinated by the Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S), which focuses on combating illicit trafficking in the region. According to the Navy, the Saildrone Voyager detected and identified a target designated by JIATF-S, tracked the vessel, and relayed information to naval forces, leading to the successful interception and cocaine seizure.
Long-Endurance Surveillance
Unlike crewed patrol vessels, Saildrone Voyager USVs can remain at sea for extended periods, allowing for continuous monitoring of large maritime areas while minimizing the need for expensive ships to be stationed in those regions.
The Navy has been operating Saildrone Voyager vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific since 2023. This fleet supports U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (NAVSOUTH) and the U.S. Fourth Fleet by providing persistent maritime surveillance in areas frequented by transnational criminal organizations.
Rear Adm. Carlos Sardiello, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. Fourth Fleet, highlighted the operational advancements achieved with autonomous systems, stating:
“This interdiction is the culmination of months of refining our tactics, techniques, and procedures for these advanced systems in the region. The ability to detect a target, have that vessel identified by our team on the watch floor, and then coordinate with assets on scene to complete the interdiction is a testament to the hard work of our Sailors and our commitment to integrating unmanned systems into fleet operations.”
Cmdr. Jon Williams, NAVSOUTH’s Technology and Innovation Director, discussed the broader implications of integrating multiple autonomous platforms:
“The success we are seeing with these robotic systems allows us to expand our reach and support our mission requirements more effectively. By layering unmanned surface and airborne systems, we create a highly effective maritime domain awareness network. Operating these systems at scale allows us to accelerate their development and integration across the entire Navy.”
From Demonstration to Daily Operations
