Robodex and Tokyu Land Launch Japan’s First Hydrogen Drone Port in Hiroshima
Robodex and Tokyu Land Corporation are collaborating to establish Japan’s first permanent hydrogen drone port in Hiroshima Prefecture. This facility aims to enhance connectivity between Hiroshima’s mainland and the islands of Osakikamijima and the surrounding areas.
Overview of the Hydrogen Drone Port
The hydrogen drone port will be located within LOGI’Q Hiroshima, a logistics complex being developed by Tokyu Land on the Seto Inland Sea coast. The facility will primarily facilitate flights to Osakikamijima, with a round-trip range of approximately 35 kilometers (about 22 miles), covering several nearby islands.
Rationale for Establishing a Hydrogen Drone Port
Traditionally, island freight in the region has relied on ferries, which are often subject to weather-related cancellations and high transportation costs. The introduction of a permanent hydrogen drone port is expected to maintain logistics operations during adverse conditions, thereby preventing residents from becoming isolated, especially when emergency supplies or essential goods are needed.
Hydrogen-powered drones offer advantages over battery-operated aircraft, including longer flight durations and greater distances. The co-located hydrogen refueling station at the port will enable quick turnaround times and continuous operations, allowing Robodex to adjust daily flight volumes based on demand.
Anticipated Benefits for Island Communities
Robodex and Tokyu Land anticipate several key benefits from the hydrogen drone port:
- Reduced delivery costs and enhanced mobility for residents.
- Improved convenience through same-day delivery of medicines and prescriptions.
- Increased job opportunities, encouraging younger residents to remain in the islands.
The project is seen as a significant advancement beyond initial demonstration flights, aiming to establish a permanent “air route” that streamlines logistics by replacing multi-leg sea and land transport with direct deliveries. Additionally, the hydrogen drone port is designed to support disaster response efforts in mountainous regions and across to Shikoku during emergencies that necessitate longer-range flights.
