Digital company Protolabs has announced an expansion of its rapid capabilities, introducing new CNC machining options and increasing production capacity for advanced 3D printing technologies.

This development aligns with the broader growth trends in the drone industry and underscores the significance of on-demand manufacturing in facilitating the transition from design to production. Drone developers can utilize rapid production services to refine designs, test components, and scale manufacturing in response to market demand, rather than committing to dedicated manufacturing lines at the outset of a project.

Rising Demand from Drone Customers

Protolabs reports that revenue from its drone sector clients has surged by over 90% since 2023, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of nearly 40%. The company indicates that its manufacturing services are now integral to the entire product lifecycle, from initial prototypes to production-ready components.

These trends have heightened the demand for manufacturing methods capable of delivering small production runs quickly while adhering to quality standards.

Enhanced Manufacturing Capabilities

Protolabs has enhanced its quick-turn CNC machining services to produce end-use metal and plastic components with improved precision, tighter tolerances, and a wider array of functional and aesthetic finishes. These components can be delivered within days, allowing engineering teams to expedite development schedules.

Additionally, the company has increased its Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printing capacity through a collaboration with HP Additive. This technology enables engineers to create lightweight, thin-walled components that maintain the necessary strength for demanding drone applications.

MJF technology is particularly effective for manufacturing customized ducts, housings, brackets, and snap-fit enclosures used in avionics cooling, payload integration, and field maintenance. The process utilizes Nylon PA-12, a material selected for its low weight, durability, and impact resistance in challenging operating conditions.

Support for Commercial and Defense Programs

The expansion of Protolabs’ capabilities also highlights its manufacturing infrastructure tailored for clients. The company operates ITAR-registered facilities in the U.S. and holds AS9100 and ISO 9001 certifications for its machining and additive manufacturing processes, which are designed for high-requirement applications.

This expansion comes at a time when the drone industry is increasingly focused on building resilient domestic supply chains and accelerating production cycles.
