Walmart Expands Drone Delivery Service in Houston: What to Expect
Wing and Walmart Expand Drone Delivery Network in Houston
Wing and Walmart have launched an expanded drone delivery network in the Houston area, introducing eight new drone delivery hubs. This expansion increases Wing’s local network from five to 13 operational “Nests,” significantly enhancing service availability.
This rollout follows Walmart’s earlier announcement that Houston would become one of its largest drone delivery markets, along with plans to extend drone delivery services to additional U.S. cities. With this new network operational, over one million residents in the area can access a wider range of Walmart essentials delivered by drone within minutes.
The expansion is a step towards Wing’s goal of providing drone delivery services to 40 million Americans across 270 locations by 2027.
How Drone Delivery Works
For eligible customers, the process of ordering a drone delivery is similar to placing any online order. Residents within the service area can shop through the Walmart app, Walmart.com, or the Wing app and select drone delivery when available.
Once an order is prepared, store staff load the package onto a Wing aircraft. The drone operates autonomously, flying at speeds of up to 60 mph and cruising at approximately 150 feet above ground. According to Wing, the average flight time to a customer’s home is less than five minutes.
Instead of landing, the drone hovers about 23 feet above the delivery location and lowers the package using a tether, ensuring a gentle placement on the ground while avoiding the need for the aircraft to touch down. Customers are required to have a small, unobstructed delivery area, roughly the size of a picnic blanket, free from overhead obstacles.
Design of Delivery Aircraft
Wing’s delivery drones are custom-designed in the United States, featuring a combination of fixed-wing flight and vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. The aircraft takes off like a helicopter, transitions to forward flight like an airplane, and returns to a hover for delivery.
The tethered delivery system is engineered to maintain stability while lowering packages, which helps protect fragile items such as eggs, baked goods, and beverages.
Commercial Drone Delivery Expansion
The expansion in Houston highlights the shift of retailers and drone operators from pilot programs to larger-scale commercial operations. By adding eight new hubs to its existing network, Wing and Walmart are enhancing both service coverage and delivery capacity in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country.
As drone delivery networks continue to develop, companies are increasingly focusing on expanding geographic reach while also striving to create a customer experience that mirrors traditional e-commerce, featuring familiar ordering processes and rapid fulfillment for everyday household items.
