FCC Highlights Industry Backing for Opening 800 MHz Spectrum to Drones

Before the October 29 vote, the FCC emphasizes support from drone manufacturers, wireless carriers, and industry groups for lifting long-standing restrictions on drone communications.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has highlighted broad industry support for a proposed rule change that would allow commercial drones to use additional cellular spectrum.
In an October 27 announcement, the office of FCC Chairman Brendan Carr released statements from drone companies, telecommunications providers, and industry organizations supporting the move.
The FCC is scheduled to vote on Thursday, October 29, on an order that would remove long-standing restrictions on drone operations in the 800 MHz cellular band.
Expanding Cellular Connectivity for Drones
The proposed change would open 50 megahertz of licensed, nationwide, low-band cellular spectrum to drone operations. According to the FCC, an outdated rule has prevented drones from using this spectrum for approximately 35 years.
The change would allow drones to make use of existing cellular spectrum, providing additional communications options for commercial operators.
Reliable wireless communications are particularly important for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations. Drone delivery, infrastructure inspection, and public safety applications may benefit from greater access to cellular networks.
However, the proposed change would not itself authorize BVLOS flights. Operators would still need to meet applicable FAA requirements.
The FCC’s announcement does not specify the technical conditions for using the spectrum or when the new rules would take effect.
Drone and Telecommunications Industries Voice Support
The FCC’s October 27 announcement included supportive statements from Amazon, AT&T, Verizon, AUVSI, the Commercial Drone Alliance, ANRA Technologies, DRONERESPONDERS, and several drone manufacturers and technology companies.
AUVSI emphasized the importance of wireless connectivity for expanding commercial operations.
“Reliable connectivity is essential to routine beyond visual line of sight flight, and more spectrum, used flexibly, helps the industry scale.”
Amazon also pointed to the role of communications infrastructure in expanding drone delivery.
“As demand for drone delivery grows, reliable wireless communications are essential to expanding operations and service to more customers.”
The support from major wireless carriers, including AT&T and Verizon, reflects the potential role of existing telecommunications networks in supporting drone operations.
DRONERESPONDERS also welcomed the proposed change, citing the importance of additional spectrum for public safety drone missions.
FCC Vote Scheduled for October 29
The FCC has positioned the proposal as part of its broader effort to support domestic drone development and commercial operations.
The October 27 announcement highlights stakeholder support rather than announcing a final regulatory decision. The Commission’s scheduled October 29 vote will determine whether the proposed changes move forward.
The final order will be important in establishing the specific conditions under which drones may use the 800 MHz cellular band.
