Uruguayan Government Launches New Drone Delivery Initiative
New Autonomous Drone Program Launched in Uruguay
The Ministry of the Interior of Uruguay has initiated a new autonomous drone program in collaboration with the technology firm Timerix S.A. This deployment aims to enhance police response capabilities by integrating gunshot detection alerts with automated drone dispatch and live aerial feeds.
According to FlytBase, the California-based company behind the program, this initiative positions Uruguay as one of the first countries in Latin America to implement such a system on a citywide scale, providing police with real-time aerial views of incidents as they occur.
Overview of the Autonomous Drone Program
The Ministry of the Interior seeks to improve the speed and quality of police responses to critical incidents throughout Montevideo. The city has been utilizing ShotSpotter, an acoustic gunshot detection system, since 2023. FlytBase reports that the new program connects these alerts to automated drone responses, making Uruguay the first to develop such a system based on an existing ShotSpotter network.
FlytBase manages the drone operations, coordinating autonomous flights from various docking stations across the city and providing live aerial footage to the command center within minutes of an alert. The platform is designed to support various deployment models, including on-premise, private cloud, and sovereign cloud, while adhering to SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and GDPR standards.
Nitin Gupta, Founder and CEO of FlytBase, emphasized the operational advantages of the program, stating, “An autonomous drone program gives you the full operational picture, from the event that triggers it, to the nearest drone that responds, to awareness on the ground.”
Integration and Impact on Public Safety
Timerix is responsible for the local integration of the drone program, which is seen as a significant advancement in how public safety agencies in Uruguay manage incident responses. Federico De Hoyos from Timerix noted that “autonomous drone surveillance represents a fundamental leap for security in Uruguay, offering a faster, more precise, and efficient response.”
The Ministry of the Interior plans to use this deployment as a model for public safety agencies in other regions, highlighting its potential to transform incident response strategies.
FlytBase’s Role in Public Safety and Operations
Founded in 2016, FlytBase develops a physical AI platform that enables autonomous drones and robots to operate in large environments, such as oil refineries and industrial facilities. The platform is compatible with various hardware and orchestrates third-party drones and sensors. Earlier this year, Titan Protection, based in Florida, received FAA approval to conduct one-to-many drone operations using FlytBase software, allowing a single remote pilot to oversee multiple automated drones across different locations.
