Japan Biz Aviation to Assist SkyDrive in Launching eVTOL by 2028
Toyota-based eVTOL manufacturer SkyDrive Inc. has announced a memorandum of understanding with Japan Biz Aviation Co., Ltd. (JBZ) to establish a commercial framework for its eVTOL flights in Japan, with a target launch date set for 2028. The announcement was made on July 9, 2026. JBZ, which operates the HondaJet and Bell 429 helicopters, will assist in designing the operational framework for SkyDrive’s services.
Why SkyDrive Needs an Operations Partner
SkyDrive has received cumulative orders for 427 aircraft, which includes 354 pre-orders and 73 basic purchase agreements. This total features a 20-unit order from AeroGulf Services in Dubai. While many international buyers possess an air operator’s certificate (AOC), domestic buyers, including rail companies, may not have this certification.
To bridge this gap, SkyDrive intends to collaborate with experienced operators to facilitate commercial flights. The agreement with JBZ is the latest in a series of memoranda of understanding aimed at establishing operational capabilities. The two companies will explore aircraft ownership and operational schemes, as well as develop a timeline for entry into service.
Leadership on the SkyDrive JBZ Partnership
Tomohiro Fukuzawa, CEO of SkyDrive, expressed his satisfaction with the partnership, stating, “I am delighted that we have been able to sign this MoU with JBZ, a specialist operator of business aircraft, including rotorcraft.” He emphasized the importance of facilitating the adoption of eVTOL technology across various industries in Japan.
Shin Koizumi, representative director of JBZ, noted the honor of signing the MoU and highlighted the potential of combining SkyDrive’s technology with JBZ’s operational expertise to advance air mobility for Japanese passengers.
Road to a 2028 Commercial Launch
SkyDrive is actively pursuing type certification from civil aviation authorities in both Japan and the United States, aiming for service entry in 2028. Production of the SKYDRIVE aircraft commenced in March 2024 at a facility operated by Suzuki Motor Corporation. The company plans to showcase its eVTOL through demonstration flights at the 2025 Osaka Expo.
JBZ, located at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, operates under the permission of the Tokyo Civil Aviation Bureau and is a member of the Japan General Aviation Service group.
