Residents of the Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) region are now able to receive pizza deliveries via drone, a service recently introduced by Flytrex, an Israeli company, in partnership with Little Caesars. This new offering is available in the Dallas suburb of Wylie, Texas.

Drone Delivery Capabilities

Flytrex utilizes its new octocopter, the Sky2, which can carry up to 8.8 pounds of . This allows the drone to deliver two large pizzas and drinks to customers within five minutes of placing an order. Flytrex CEO Amit Regev noted that the partnership with Little Caesars has been in development for several years, with initial discussions beginning in 2023.

Regev explained that previous drone models were unable to accommodate large pizza deliveries, but advancements in the Sky2 drone have made this possible. The drone’s eight-motor configuration enhances its hauling capacity and reliability, allowing it to maintain safety standards during deliveries.

Design and Functionality

The Sky2 drone features multiple redundancies to ensure reliable operation. It is equipped with dual Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) systems, and two batteries, allowing it to complete deliveries even if one component fails. The drone can also adapt its -loading methods depending on the delivery requirements.

  • Remote pickup mechanism for efficient loading at restaurants
  • Extended flight duration for deliveries within a 4-mile radius
  • Automatic recharging upon return to the operations area

Integration with Little Caesars

Flytrex’s system is directly integrated with Little Caesars’ kitchen dispatch system. Orders are automatically sent to the restaurant’s point of sale, prompting immediate preparation. Once the food is ready, the drone is dispatched for delivery.

The drone operates at a cruising altitude of approximately 230 feet, descending to around 82 feet to lower the pizza order to the customer using a specialized delivery package. After the delivery, the drone returns to its base for recharging.

Expansion Plans and Community Engagement

Wylie was chosen as the initial site for this partnership due to its suburban characteristics, which are conducive to . Regev indicated that the company is looking for areas with detached homes and backyards, as these environments are more suitable for their operations. Flytrex plans to expand to a third location in the DFW metroplex in the coming weeks.

Establishing a new delivery service requires extensive preparation. Flytrex operates under its Part 135 carrier status, which was achieved after a lengthy collaboration with regulators. The company engages with local communities, first responders, and municipalities to inform them about the service and its benefits.

Regev emphasized the importance of communicating with local merchants to explain the advantages of drone delivery, including faster service and cost savings. This approach aims to enhance customer satisfaction while providing economic benefits to participating restaurants.
