BayCare Hospital System Partners with Zipline for Drone Delivery Network

Overview of the Partnership
Zipline, known for operating the world’s largest autonomous drone delivery network, is set to expand its services in the United States, focusing on medical supply and food delivery. In a recent announcement, BayCare, the largest not-for-profit academic health-care system in West-Central Florida, revealed plans to establish a drone delivery network in collaboration with Zipline, with operations expected to commence by late 2027.
Initial Implementation and Expansion Plans
BayCare will begin the drone delivery service at select facilities in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area, targeting high-volume hospitals and laboratories to enhance the efficiency of transporting critical items. Donna Lynch, vice president of laboratory services at BayCare, stated that the initial focus will be on Pinellas County, where there is a significant concentration of facilities and patient activity. The service is anticipated to expand throughout the Tampa Bay area in the future.
Details of the Delivery System
The BayCare system comprises 16 hospitals and numerous other health-care facilities across the Tampa Bay and central Florida regions. Initially, the drone service will facilitate deliveries of medical supplies and equipment between BayCare facilities, with plans to extend to home deliveries for patients.
Under the proposed system, healthcare providers will place orders into a Zipline Dropbox at designated BayCare sites. Zipline’s electric-powered drones, stationed in charging locations in Pinellas County, will autonomously retrieve and deliver orders to their destinations, including other BayCare facilities or directly to patients’ homes.
Delivery Mechanism
Upon reaching its destination, the drone will hover at approximately 300 feet and lower a pod containing the order to the ground via a tether. After completing the delivery, the drone will return to its charging station.
Environmental and Operational Benefits
BayCare’s drone delivery system is designed to ensure precise deliveries, even in adverse weather conditions. The initiative aims to reduce delivery-related emissions and alleviate traffic congestion, while the drones are engineered to operate at altitudes that minimize noise disruption in neighborhoods.
According to BayCare, the program will offer patients an optional delivery service for prescriptions, facilitating access to medications and supplies without requiring trips to pharmacies or care sites. The new system is expected to enhance delivery speed and reliability while decreasing the need for ground transportation, particularly for small, time-sensitive items.
Zipline’s Track Record and Future Plans
BayCare’s decision to partner with Zipline is based on the company’s established reputation in drone delivery services. Zipline received its FAA Part 135 air carrier certification in 2022, enabling it to conduct beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) flights and operate over populated areas for commercial deliveries. The company has successfully completed over 135 million autonomous miles globally, delivering more than 20 million items.
Expansion of Zipline’s Operations
This partnership with BayCare is part of Zipline’s broader strategy to collaborate with major U.S. hospital systems. The company currently operates similar services in numerous health systems across the country, including the Cleveland Clinic and Michigan Medicine. Since its inception in 2014, Zipline has expanded its operations to five African countries and various cities in the U.S. and Japan, delivering a range of products including food and health-related items.
Recently, Zipline secured $800 million in investments to support its expansion in U.S. markets, including a significant increase in manufacturing capacity to produce up to 15,000 autonomous aircraft annually. The company has also announced plans to extend its services to Houston and Phoenix, as well as expand its food delivery offerings in Texas.
