Amazon Expands Prime Air Drone Delivery Service Across the U.S.

Amazon has announced a significant expansion of its Prime Air service, aiming to reach nearly 500 cities and towns by the end of 2026. This expansion is expected to increase the service’s operational footprint approximately sixfold.

Currently, Prime Air operates from 11 sites across 10 metropolitan areas in the U.S. The company plans to introduce service in additional cities, including Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise, with more locations expected to follow later this year.

Current Operations and Future Plans

Amazon’s Prime Air service is currently available in metro areas such as Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Omaha, Baton Rouge, Detroit, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Waco. Each delivery site serves an area of approximately 175 square miles.

The expansion marks a significant increase in the scale of Amazon’s program, which began commercial operations in 2020 under its air carrier certificate. Amazon was the first company to operate a drone weighing more than 55 pounds as a standard Part 135 operator, according to the FAA.

Additionally, Amazon has received FAA authorization for beyond visual line of sight () operations, allowing drones to operate beyond the direct sight of a pilot or observer, which is crucial for scaling delivery networks.

Eligible Products for Drone Delivery

Amazon states that most Prime Air locations now offer millions of products eligible for drone delivery. Categories include:

  • Groceries
  • Electronics
  • Cosmetics
  • Medications
  • Household goods

Products weighing five pounds or less and fitting within a large shoebox can qualify for delivery. This includes over 60% of frequently purchased items. While deliveries can arrive in as little as 30 minutes, most are completed within an hour after checkout.

Prime members can access free drone delivery for orders of $50 or more, while smaller orders incur a fee for both Prime and non-Prime customers.

Technology Behind Prime Air

The expansion will utilize Amazon’s MK30 , which has a maximum takeoff weight of 83.2 pounds and an operational range of 7.5 miles. This range supports an area of about 174 square miles around a Prime Air Drone Delivery Center.

The MK30 is equipped with onboard cameras and sensors for navigation and obstacle detection. Its Detect-and-Avoid system monitors the surrounding airspace, enabling the drone to respond to obstacles during flight.

As part of Amazon’s existing shopping and delivery system, customers in eligible areas can select drone delivery during checkout and designate a delivery point. At the delivery location, the drone performs checks for people, pets, and vehicles before releasing the package.

This planned expansion signifies a shift in Amazon’s drone program from limited individual markets to a broader network aimed at serving tens of millions of potential customers nationwide.
