SimActive and Phase One Streamline Large-Scale Defense Mapping

The integration enables defense organizations to process thousands of high-resolution aerial images more rapidly, which cuts down on manual labor and accelerates the creation of maps.

SimActive has unveiled an integrated workflow with Phase One aerial imaging systems designed to accelerate large-scale mapping for defense use cases. This solution merges Phase One’s high-resolution imagery with SimActive’s Correlator3D software to handle large volumes of aerial data within strict timeframes.

The companies state that this workflow tackles a mounting challenge for defense mapping teams: converting thousands of detailed aerial images into accurate, usable maps in a timely manner.

Phase One reports that certain users gather between 10,000 and 50,000 large-format images daily. Handling this volume of data often demands substantial computing resources and time.

"We have many end users collecting 10,000 to 50,000 large-format images a day," Jacob Hut, Application Engineering Director at Phase One, commented on the development. "Our integration with SimActive reduces manual work and helps turn that imagery into usable mapping products faster."

Reducing Processing Time for Large Datasets

The integrated workflow permits users to import Phase One imagery directly into Correlator3D, eliminating the need for separate file conversion steps.

Correlator3D can then automate the processing and distribute the workload across multiple computers. This method accelerates the production of elevation models and orthomosaics, which merge aerial images into precise maps.

Minimizing manual steps also assists mapping teams in managing expanding datasets without hindering production rates.

The companies have not released specific performance benchmarks for the integrated workflow. Nevertheless, the capability to process large datasets across multiple computers meets a critical need for organizations dealing with high-resolution imagery.

Supporting Defense Mapping Requirements

Defense organizations frequently require up-to-date geographic information to support planning and operations. High-resolution aerial imagery offers detailed views of terrain, infrastructure, and other areas of interest.

However, collecting imagery is merely one part of the process. Teams must also transform that data into mapping products that analysts and other users can utilize.

The SimActive and Phase One workflow concentrates on this processing stage, helping organizations transition from image collection to finished maps with fewer manual interventions.

SimActive’s Correlator3D supports imagery from drones, crewed aircraft, and satellites. The software generates elevation models, point clouds, orthomosaics, and 3D mapping products.

This latest integration expands the software’s role in large-scale aerial mapping, where processing speed and the capacity to handle high volumes of data are essential requirements.

SimActive, headquartered in Montreal, develops photogrammetry software for mapping firms and government organizations globally. Phase One, based in Copenhagen, Denmark, provides high-resolution imaging systems for aerial mapping, industrial inspection, security, and other applications.
