St. Louis-based WingXpand has announced its participation in the Verizon Community Disaster Resilience Innovation Accelerator, a program aimed at exploring innovative approaches to disaster response, , and community resilience.

The accelerator, powered by MassChallenge, unites innovators, Verizon Frontline, and emergency response organizations to investigate how emerging technologies can enhance community preparedness and recovery from natural disasters.

Challenges in Emergency Management

This announcement comes amid ongoing challenges posed by tornado outbreaks, flooding, hurricanes, and wildfires, which continue to strain emergency management agencies nationwide. During significant disasters, responders often encounter damaged infrastructure, power outages, and disruptions, which can hinder efforts to assess damage, identify hazards, and locate individuals in need of assistance.

Enhancing Situational Awareness with Autonomous Aircraft

WingXpand’s contribution to the program focuses on its xRAI™ Smart Plane™, an autonomous aircraft designed for rapid deployment in the field. The system can be launched within minutes and is intended to provide aerial coverage over extensive areas.

The aircraft features long-endurance flight capabilities, onboard artificial intelligence, and a portable suitable for emergency operations. WingXpand asserts that this platform can assist responders in gathering critical information when traditional communication or transportation infrastructure is compromised.
