Canada is set to enhance its capabilities in drone and aerospace technology with the establishment of a new Drone Innovation Hub. This initiative aims to solidify the country’s position as a leader in autonomous aviation.
Details of the Drone Innovation Hub
The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) will oversee the launch of the Hub, which will be located in Ottawa and Montreal, with support from the Canadian federal government. Derek Gowanlock, a senior NRC official, outlined the Hub’s structure, which includes the establishment of a new lab focused on drone and flight autonomy.
Key facilities within the Hub will include:
- Center for Autonomous Flight Systems: Located at Ottawa Airport, adjacent to the NRC’s Flight Research Lab.
- Center for Drone Innovation: To be established in Maribel, Quebec, a notable area for drone manufacturing.
The Hub is part of a broader C$900 million investment by the federal government under Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy, aimed at bolstering the domestic defense economy.
Objectives and Future Projects
Gowanlock emphasized that the Hub’s mission is to bridge the gap between Canada’s drone and aerospace industries and the defense sector, fostering the development of a domestic military and dual-use technology base. The NRC has been tasked with aiding the commercialization of drone technologies and counter-UAS systems for potential use by National Defence and for export.
The Hub’s development, including construction, equipment procurement, and staffing, is expected to unfold over three years, starting from the fiscal year beginning April 1. Initial projects will focus on ongoing defense programs and support industry partners in their technology development efforts.
“The priorities will fundamentally be set by the National Defence establishment,” Gowanlock noted, indicating that the Hub will align its efforts with the needs of the defense sector while also considering industry visions for long-term growth.

The establishment of the Drone Innovation Hub aligns with a global trend where nations are rapidly advancing their drone manufacturing capabilities for both defense and dual-use applications. Gowanlock highlighted the significance of drone technology in modern warfare, particularly in light of recent developments in Ukraine.
The Hub is expected to foster advancements in various drone technologies, including:
- Class one and Class two UAVs (small and medium-sized drones).
- Large-scale aerial autonomy vehicles, such as AI-enabled drones designed to operate alongside manned fighter aircraft.
These developments aim to provide the aviation industry with essential resources for designing and building advanced aircraft, which may be beyond the reach of smaller manufacturing companies.
Industry Collaboration and Events
The Hub will also serve as a venue for industry events, including aviation competitions and forums, facilitating collaboration among various stakeholders. Gowanlock noted that these events will encourage integration and experimentation among industry partners, the NRC, and National Defence.
