AUVSI Appoints Heather Lee as Acting President and CEO Following Michael Robbins’ Departure
AUVSI Announces Leadership Transition
The Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) has confirmed a leadership change set to take effect this fall. President and CEO Michael Robbins will depart from the organization on September 30, 2026. Following his departure, Chief Operating Officer Heather Lee will assume the role of Acting President and CEO starting October 1.
Robbins to Lead Semiconductor Industry Association
Robbins has been appointed as the President and CEO of the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). In light of this transition, the AUVSI Board of Directors has initiated a search for a permanent successor to Robbins.
John “JC” Coffey, Chairperson of the AUVSI Board of Directors, remarked on Robbins’ selection, stating, “Michael’s selection to lead SIA is a testament to the profile AUVSI has built on Capitol Hill, the Executive Branch, and across the industry. He came up through this organization’s advocacy ranks and has been a transformative leader for AUVSI.” Coffey expressed gratitude for Robbins’ contributions to the organization and affirmed the Board’s confidence in Heather Lee to maintain AUVSI’s progress.
Robbins’ Tenure at AUVSI
Robbins joined AUVSI in 2020 as Chief Advocacy Officer and was appointed President and CEO in 2024. During his leadership, AUVSI enhanced its advocacy efforts in Washington and increased engagement with policymakers to support the growth of a robust U.S.-based drone ecosystem. The association reported that its representatives testified before Congress eight times during his tenure.
AUVSI also broadened its focus across defense, commercial drones, and autonomous systems in ground and maritime sectors. The organization has assured that its current policy priorities and programs will persist through the leadership transition.
Robbins expressed pride in his time at AUVSI, stating, “AUVSI has given me the opportunity of a lifetime, and I’m proud of what our team has built together.” He emphasized his confidence in the leadership team to sustain AUVSI’s momentum and pledged to remain an advocate for the industry.
Heather Lee to Oversee Transition
Heather Lee, currently serving as AUVSI’s Chief Operating Officer, will lead the organization during the search for a new President and CEO. Prior to her role at AUVSI, Lee spent nearly two decades at CTIA – The Wireless Association, where she led various initiatives, including the Super Mobility event.
Lee stated, “Michael built this team to last, and that’s exactly what you’re seeing right now. Our policy priorities, committee structure, and government relations strategy remain through this transition.” She assured stakeholders that operations would continue seamlessly, maintaining the same level of engagement and responsiveness.
Ongoing Commitment to the Autonomous Systems Sector
The leadership change occurs as AUVSI continues its efforts in policy and industry work within the expanding autonomous systems sector. The organization represents a diverse range of companies and stakeholders involved in uncrewed systems, robotics, and autonomous technologies.
The AUVSI Board has committed to conducting a thorough and efficient search for the next President and CEO, with Lee at the helm during this process.
