Automated Drone Surveying System Deployed for Bridge Construction in Germany

Skyports Drone Services has collaborated with HOCHTIEF to implement an automated drone surveying system at the Rheinbrücke Leverkusen bridge construction site near Cologne, Germany. This initiative introduces routine beyond visual line of sight () operations, enhancing the monitoring of construction progress.

Transitioning to Automated Monitoring

The Rheinbrücke Leverkusen project is extensive and complex, with construction expected to continue until 2028. The project includes significant earthworks, the demolition of the existing bridge, and new construction on both banks of the Rhine River.

Prior to the introduction of this automated system, project monitoring relied on manual methods and sporadic drone flights, which required personnel to be present on-site. The new system allows for a fully automated workflow, enabling regular data collection without the need for physical access to the site.

Each drone flight captures data that is processed into both 2D and 3D outputs, providing detailed visual models of the site. This capability allows teams to track changes on a weekly basis, facilitating early detection of potential issues and minimizing the risk of delays or cost overruns.

Data Processing and Insights for Construction Teams

The survey data is processed using software, which generates visual models and reports for tracking construction progress. These models aid in planning and coordination among teams, providing a consistent and measurable overview of site activities.

Alex Brown, CEO of Skyports Drone Services, emphasized the importance of automation and remote operations in enhancing project outcomes. He noted that large infrastructure projects are complex and that automated drone surveys can provide valuable insights for resource planning and early issue detection.

From HOCHTIEF’s perspective, Klaus Grüttner, Executive Vice President Europe at HOCHTIEF Infrastructure, highlighted the operational benefits of having consistent and accurate data. He stated that the partnership with Skyports allows for seamless monitoring of construction progress and supports precise billing, particularly in earthworks.
