A police counter-drone vehicle collided with a Mercedes Sprinter in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s motorcade during a high- summit in Copenhagen on Thursday morning, according to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred near the Bella Center during the European Political Community summit.

The collision raises questions about coordination protocols when counter-drone systems operate alongside VIP protection details in urban environments.

Incident Details and Police Response

The accident happened Thursday morning at Ørestads Boulevard and Vejlands Allé, near the Bella Center on Amager where the EPC summit was taking place. Copenhagen Police initially withheld details about the collision, only confirming that “one of their vehicles” was involved in a minor accident.

Multiple sources with connections to the summit confirmed to Ekstra Bladet that the second vehicle was part of Zelenskyy’s motorcade. The Mercedes Sprinter was transporting members of the Ukrainian president’s entourage at the time of impact. According to the report, the same vehicle had also been used to transport other VIP guests during the summit.

Despite photographs from the scene showing a vehicle identical to police anti-drone units, Copenhagen Police declined to confirm the vehicle type or provide additional operational details.

Official Statement

In a brief email response, Copenhagen Police stated: “Copenhagen Police can report that in connection with escort operations this morning, a minor traffic accident occurred between two vehicles. No personal injuries occurred in the accident, whose course of events will now be clarified further.”

The police added: “Copenhagen Police does not wish to provide or comment further.”

Counter-Drone Security Operations

Police anti-drone vehicles have become standard equipment for protecting high-profile events and VIPs from potential drone threats. These specialized units typically carry radio frequency jammers and detection equipment designed to neutralize unauthorized drones in restricted airspace.

The EPC summit brought together dozens of European leaders, creating a complex environment requiring coordination between multiple protection details and local law enforcement.

DroneXL’s Take

This incident highlights the operational challenges of deploying counter-drone systems in dynamic, high-stakes environments. As anti- becomes more common at major events, security services must balance drone threat mitigation with the complexity of multi-vehicle motorcade operations.

The collision underscores how counter-UAS operations add another layer to already complex VIP protection scenarios. With world leaders increasingly targeted by drone threats, police forces worldwide are rapidly acquiring counter-drone capabilities—but incidents like this remind us that integrating new technology into established security protocols isn’t always seamless.

It’s worth noting that the lack of transparency from Copenhagen Police is typical for ongoing investigations involving head-of-state protection. Still, the incident raises legitimate questions about whether counter-drone units receive adequate training for operating in close proximity to motorcades moving at speed through urban areas.
